20-year-old girl sentenced for fatally hitting 85-year-old man at a crosswalk
The accident occurred on the morning of November 4 on the Parichi — Chyrvony Berag highway, within the village of Shchadryn in Zhlobin district.

The girl, who was driving a company Lada, was moving in the rain on a wet road at a speed of 68 km/h. She noticed an 85-year-old man walking on the carriageway in the same direction in the oncoming lane in advance. The girl slowed down to approximately 50 km/h, but did not stop completely.
As the car approached, the pedestrian began to cross the road. A collision occurred as a result. The man later died in the hospital from his injuries.
The investigation established that the driver violated traffic regulations, which require taking measures, up to a complete stop, when danger arises. An experiment showed that she could have noticed the pedestrian from a distance of about 178 meters, and the expertise confirmed the technical possibility of avoiding the collision both by timely reducing speed and by emergency braking.
After the accident, the girl initially did not report the collision, stating that she found an elderly man on the roadside. Only later did she admit to the incident.
The court sentenced her to two years in a penal colony and deprived her of the right to drive vehicles for a period of five years.
The verdict has not yet entered into force and can be appealed.
