131 Political Prisoners Released in Venezuela

In Venezuela, local authorities on August 14 announced the release of 131 political prisoners. According to Minister of Communication and Information Miguel Ángel Pérez Pirela, the freed individuals had their imprisonment replaced by so-called "alternative measures of restriction of freedom." He did not provide further details.

Opposition politician Dinorah Figuera stated that those released are not all political prisoners in the country. According to her, each of them deserves complete freedom, and therefore the opposition will continue to demand the release of all political prisoners and their return to their families.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the release of 131 people a "decisive step" towards national reconciliation in Venezuela.

He also recalled that since January 3, when former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro was captured during a US military operation, 1046 prisoners have already been released in the country.
