Russia's heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser "Pyotr Veliky" will likely not be repaired or modernized. A special commission has preliminarily deemed such work impractical. This was reported by Vladimir Maltsev, head of the All-Russian Movement for Fleet Support, writes "Kommersant".

According to Vladimir Maltsev, the cruiser is beyond restoration, as every ship has a certain degree of wear and tear.
Initially, it was planned to start modernizing "Pyotr Veliky" after the completion of work on the sister ship "Admiral Nakhimov". Thus, the Russian fleet hoped to retain at least one ship of this class in its composition.
However, the repair and modernization of "Admiral Nakhimov" were delayed until 2022, so work on "Pyotr Veliky" could not begin within the planned timeframe.
"Pyotr Veliky" is the flagship of the Northern Fleet and the only nuclear-powered cruiser of Project 1144 "Orlan" that currently remains in the Russian fleet. It is called the most powerful surface combat ship of the Russian Navy and the heaviest non-aircraft carrier combat ship in the world.
In total, four cruisers of this project were built in the USSR from the 1970s to the 1990s.
