Lithuanian Prime Minister denies Trump is pressuring Lithuania over Belarusian potash

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius denies that the United States is pressuring Vilnius to resume the export of Belarusian potash fertilizers through the Klaipėda port. According to him, reports in foreign media about such attempts are rather an "attempt to take the temperature," meaning to gauge the reaction of Lithuania and other EU countries.

On October 30, Sinkevičius told journalists that he had not felt any pressure from American strategic partners. According to him, no written or verbal demands had been made to Lithuania.

He emphasized that the country independently determines its policy, understands the threats and reasons for imposing sanctions, and currently does not plan to review the restrictions. The Lithuanian Prime Minister added that advice and requests from partners can be heard, but Vilnius makes the final decisions itself.

Earlier, Politico, citing four European officials, reported that U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coule had unofficially discussed with Lithuanian diplomats in recent weeks the possibility of easing restrictions on the transit of Belarusian goods. According to two Eastern European officials, Coule has been trying to convince representatives of the Lithuanian authorities at various levels for over a year — virtually since his first visit to Minsk.
