Latushka: Five criminal cases are underway related to threats to my life and health

According to the head of the National Anti-Crisis Management, Belarusian special services are trying to obtain information about his entourage and movements.

In an interview with Pavel Latushka for the Belarusian Service of Polish Radio, the conversation, among other things, touched upon the detection of people connected to special services within democratic structures.

Latushka noted in his conversation with Aksana Kolb that even states with their own counterintelligence cannot completely protect themselves from such incidents. He cited Poland and judge Tomasz Szmydt, who had access to state secrets and later fled to Belarus, as an example.

"You can criticize as much as you want. That's the easiest thing to do. But if you analyze the arguments, the arguments should be as follows. The democratic forces of Belarus do not have counterintelligence, and not because they don't want to. They do not have the right to have it in the countries where they reside. If we create counterintelligence here, we will immediately violate the legislation of this country," Latushka stated.

According to the politician, in the last month alone, 11 new recruitment attempts were recorded in his team and faction in the Coordination Council.

"The latest recruitment attempts involve requests for money to provide information about my schedule, where I travel, what I do.

This is systemic [work]. Five criminal cases are underway related to threats to my life and health.

For example, two weeks ago, a district court in Warsaw initiated another criminal case concerning a threat to my life, instructing the prosecutor to investigate this crime," Latushka shared the details.

According to Latushka, the KGB, intelligence structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and military intelligence are working against Belarusian democratic structures. The democratic forces themselves, according to him, can primarily rely on the law enforcement agencies of the countries where they reside.

"When situations like people disappearing occur, what was the first thing I did? I immediately informed the prosecutor and the police. When attempts are made to recruit employees, I immediately informed the military prosecutor of the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw."

The politician urged people to report recruitment cases not only to human rights defenders but also to local law enforcement agencies. In his opinion, the activities of Belarusian special services against Belarusians abroad should also be viewed as a security problem for the countries in which they live.

According to Latushka, even the state cannot guarantee one hundred percent security. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen personal precautions.

"I say – my life is behind closed doors. That is, I always lock the door. Not just behind me when I leave. This is life under cameras. This means you need to use means that help control the space you are in. You cannot drink water if someone else opens the bottle for you. It's better to open it yourself. That is, to apply self-security measures. This is also important."

Latushka also called for caution regarding strangers who make contact and identify themselves as employees of Ukrainian special services. According to him, such cases have become frequent recently. He emphasized that contacts with foreign special services are a violation of the legislation of the host country.

To verify people who arouse suspicion, democratic structures, according to Latushka, can seek help from "Belpol."
