New President of the International Ice Hockey Federation Elected. A Belarusian was among the contenders
72-year-old German Franz Reindl became the 15th president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

He became the first German citizen to hold this position since Günther Sabetzki (1975–1994).
Initially, there were nine contenders for the post, including Belarusian Sergei Goncharov, but he withdrew his candidacy before the vote, as did some other candidates.
The voting took place in two rounds, with Reindl, Czech Petr Bříza, and Kyrgyz Ayvaz Amarkanov participating. Reindl was elected in the second round.
The term of office for the new president and the IIHF Council will last from October 2026 to October 2030. Currently, Canadian Luc Tardif is the head of world hockey.
Reindl was a professional hockey player, participated in three Olympics, eight World Championships, and from 1992 to 2014 was the general manager of the German national team, also organized three World Championships in that country. From 2014 to 2022, he served as President of the German Ice Hockey Federation.
It should be recalled that after the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian ice hockey is under an international ban. National teams have been suspended from World Championships and Olympics, and clubs do not participate in European hockey cups. In the summer, Belarusian youth and women's hockey were reinstated in international competitions, but the youth and national teams are still under sanctions.
