How often should you have sex to get pregnant faster? Scientists named the optimal frequency

To get pregnant faster, it's not enough to meticulously calculate ovulation days. A large-scale Norwegian study involving over 64 thousand women showed that the frequency of intimacy is much more important than previously thought.

Most couples planning a family addition usually focus on the so-called fertility window — a short six-day period around ovulation when the chances of conception are highest. However, as writes FitBook.de, scientists from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the University of Bergen, and Telemark Hospital decided to find out whether the overall frequency of sex throughout the month plays a role.

To obtain reliable conclusions, the researchers analyzed data from over 64 thousand women who became pregnant naturally and participated in the large-scale Norwegian study "Mother, Father and Child" (Den norske mor, far og barn-undersøkelsen, MoBa).

The participants described their intimate life in detail for four weeks before conception. According to the data obtained, the respondents were divided into four groups: less than once a week, one to two times, three to four times, and more than four times.

The most significant difference was found in the last group. Women who made love more than four times a week had a 16% higher probability of getting pregnant within one cycle compared to those who practiced it one or two times.

At the same time, no clear difference was found between the other groups. For those who had intimacy three to four times or less than once, the chances of pregnancy in one cycle did not significantly differ from the indicators of the group with one to two times.

The time needed for conception also differed. On average, the study participants needed 4.5 months. Among women who had sex less than once a week, this period was 4.8 months, and among those who did it more than four times, it was 3.7 months.

Why frequent sex can help

One possible explanation for the results is the short period when conception is possible at all. In one of the earlier studies, scientists observed 221 women and determined ovulation based on hormone levels in urine.

Conception occurred only when sex happened within six days leading up to and including ovulation. On the day of ovulation, the probability of conception was about 33%, and five days before it, about 10%.

In the Norwegian study, the connection between frequent sex and faster conception was particularly noticeable among women expecting their first child. The authors suggest that couples without prior pregnancy experience are less likely to engage in targeted cycle tracking. Therefore, frequent sex increases the chances of simply hitting the right period.

Moreover, the study did not show that very frequent sex reduces the chances of conception. On the contrary, women who had sex more than four times a week had a higher probability of getting pregnant within one cycle.

This is consistent with a 2025 meta-analysis that combined the results of 22 studies. It showed that after a short abstinence of no more than two days, there were slightly fewer spermatozoa in the ejaculate, but they were more mobile, and damage to their DNA was less common. However, these studies evaluated the quality of sperm, not the likelihood of pregnancy.

Nuances and limitations of the study

The authors of the Norwegian study note several limitations. It included only women who planned a pregnancy and eventually conceived naturally. Therefore, the obtained results cannot be automatically applied to everyone trying to conceive, especially to couples who have difficulties with this.

In addition, data on the frequency of sex and the time it took for conception were based on participants' recollections. The researchers also did not know on which specific days of the menstrual cycle sexual acts occurred, and they had no information about the quality of the partners' sperm.
