A 16-year-old teenager opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher. He was later shot dead by a local resident, writes BBC.

The children killed were five, eight, and 11 years old. Another child, aged seven, and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

According to law enforcement, the attacker broke into Silver Rail Elementary School, opening fire on locked doors. The police did not provide any other details about the suspect, apart from his age.

It is also unknown whether the attacker was connected to the school in any way.

"We are shocked and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," said Bend-La Pine School District Superintendent Steven Cook.

"It is impossible to find words to express the grief our community is experiencing," he added.

According to Bend Police Chief Mike Kranz, the 16-year-old teenager was shot dead by a local resident who noticed him enter the school and followed him.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek thanked the local resident who, she said, "heroically intervened to prevent further casualties."

School shootings are a constant occurrence in the United States.

Among the most high-profile attacks are the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, and Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022.

According to CNN's calculations, the shooting in Bend was the 36th school shooting incident in American schools since the beginning of 2026.

Each such incident re-ignites debates about gun control legislation in a country where the right to keep and bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.

Supporters of gun rights advocate for arming teachers, considering it one of the possible protective measures.
