Second attack on Riyadh airport in two days: one killed and over 10 injured

At least one person was killed and 11 injured in the second attack of the weekend on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, writes the BBC.

"The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) confirms that a Pakistani citizen was killed in the attack [...] and 11 others were injured," the agency stated in a post on the social network X.

A Saudi Arabian Armed Forces spokesperson stated that Sunday's strike caused a fire in one of the airport terminals.

This occurred the day after an attack that killed 13 people and injured over 300. Earlier last week, the airport was also targeted in attacks. Yemeni Houthis claimed responsibility for these attacks and warned airlines and passengers against using Saudi Arabian airports and airspace.

The fighters reported that they attacked the airport with ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones.

As Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated on Sunday, the group also struck Saudi oil facilities and Dammam airport in the east of the kingdom.

He promised to continue "operations with increasing intensity deep within Saudi territory," warning that all airports in the country – with the exception of those in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina for Muslims – are potential targets. The Houthis state that they are attacking Saudi Arabia due to its support for government forces in the Yemeni civil war, as well as due to an airstrike on Sanaa airport. A ceasefire agreement reached between Riyadh and the rebels in 2022 was violated in the summer of 2026.

On Sunday, Major General Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition, reported that air defense systems intercepted a missile near Riyadh airport, and a fire broke out in Terminal 4, caused by a hit from an "unknown projectile."

UK Defense Minister Wes Streeting condemned the Houthi attack on Riyadh airport on Sunday, calling it a dangerous escalation.

"This is a dangerous escalation and, I fear, a worrying trend in Houthi actions targeting civilian objects in Saudi Arabia," he stated in an interview with Sky News. "That is why the UK provides Saudi Arabia with support, supplying air defense assets, and also ensuring in-flight refueling for aircraft."
