Simple electrician from Asipovichy collected a rich collection of small coins from around the world
Mikhail Samartsev's work is not related to cash registers, banks, or accounting. He works as an electrician in district electrical networks, but at the same time can tell many interesting things about money. Mikhail is passionate about collecting the smallest coins from various countries, writes the publication "Asipovicki Krai".

This hobby appeared in Mikhail's childhood. His cousin from Salihorsk once introduced him to it. The boy started collecting kopecks because he realized that even small coins can have value if they are not ordinary money of the smallest denomination in circulation, but monetary units of other countries from past centuries. He paid special attention to coins issued starting from 1800.
Currently, the collection of the Asipovichy resident numbers over a thousand coins from more than a hundred countries around the world. All of them have the same denomination, but differ in issue time, mint, type, metal, edge design (rim), diameter, and weight.
Among the exhibits are rare specimens. For example, a Danish Rigsdaler from 1838 and one of the Egyptian coins issued in a small mintage. Of particular interest is a coin from South Africa, on both sides of which the reverse is minted. Such a monetary sign has collector's value and is expensive.
Coins come to Mikhail through various means. Many he finds on specialized trading platforms, buys at auctions, or exchanges with other collectors. Some specimens he stumbled upon accidentally, others were gifted by acquaintances, and some he brought back from foreign trips. Among the latest acquisitions are several Finnish coins, passed to him by his brother, who is also interested in numismatics.
Since most coins have a long history, they are often not in the best condition. Mikhail has learned to assess their quality: degree of wear, presence of corrosion, condition of the edge, and clarity of the relief. He has also mastered restoration methods. He performs all work himself, using special tools, taking into account the material from which each coin is made.
Initially, the collector kept his first finds in a casket. Now, the entire collection occupies 15 modern albums. The coins are distributed by countries and continents, and the sections are marked with the flags of the respective states. Thanks to this hobby, Mikhail also learned the flags of various countries.

The collection is gradually expanding, covering more and more countries worldwide.
Mikhail notes with regret that modern youth have become less interested in old coins. According to him, collecting monetary signs is not just a hobby, but an opportunity to literally hold history in one's hands. Coins help learn about countries and eras, changes in monetary systems, and how materials and minting technologies have evolved.
Even a worn coin can tell much more than meets the eye. Many such specimens are no longer used as a means of payment, but remain part of the cultural heritage that needs to be studied and preserved.
