The Covered Market of the Red Children in Paris's Le Marais district had existed since 1615 and was primarily famous for its street food.

It got its name (literally — «Market of the Red Children») thanks to the red clothing worn by orphans from an orphanage that was located nearby until 1772. This market, known for its street food, was repeatedly included in the top ten best in the world, writes the BBC.
According to French media reports, the fire started around three in the morning. Hours later, firefighters were still dousing the smoldering ruins with water. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
— When we arrived, the fire was already fully ablaze: high flames engulfed the entire interior of the covered market, — Pierre de Bouvier, a representative of the fire department, told journalists.
According to him, «the fire destroyed 1000 square meters».
«The market is completely destroyed — nothing remains of it or its metal structure. The main task of the rescuers was to prevent the fire from spreading «to the residential buildings and shops located above the market», the firefighter clarified.
Ariel Weil, mayor of the central sector of Paris, who arrived at the scene in the morning, told Le Parisien: «It's seven in the morning now, people and vendors are starting to arrive: the Enfants Rouges market is destroyed, it has burned to the ground».
«Fortunately, firefighters arrived very quickly, deploying many units, and they also knew the area well», — he added and noted that «the worst was avoided», as the fire could have spread to neighboring houses.
