According to Reuters, citing a statement from the Swedish government, the decision was made based on a security situation assessment.
The Swedish authorities link the increased threats primarily to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to the government's statement, this has led to the emergence of hybrid threats and increased activity by hostile actors within the Schengen area.
Border controls will be in effect from November 12, 2026, to May 11, 2027.
