Two different approaches to organizing the summer pastime in Belarus. Celebrating the folk fest of love or having your photo taken in front of a Stalin's statue.
The recent reports by Julia Darashkevich and Adrey Liankevich, the photo correspondents of Nasha Niva, show how radically different the interests of the Belarusians can be. This weekend one had a choice between the folkfest „Kupalle“, and the military games at the so-called “Stalin’s Line”.
“Kupalle” is a pagan-rooted holiday of summer and love.

“Stalin’s Line” is a line of military fortifications, which were never actually used in the WWII, but now have recently become one of the major “ideologically correct” attractions. Taking a photo in front of the Stalin’s bust is certainly something to commemorate the anniversary of Germany invading Belarus. And who cares that Stalin was reluctant to take the news about the invasion seriously, or that the “Stalin’s Line” was nothing more than an abandoned complex of trenches at that time?
