An Online Guide to the Spelling and Pronunciation of Belarusian Settlement Names Has Been Launched
There are over 23 thousand settlements in Belarus. It is often unclear how to correctly pronounce and spell the name of one or another. And while the much-discussed Luninets is graced with stress marks in Wikipedia, questions may arise with a village of a dozen houses. To remedy this, Ihar Palynski and his colleagues created a special online guide, writesBudzma.

Currently, the guide allows you to find out how the names of settlements in our country are spelled in Belarusian (with stress marks!) and in Russian, alternative spellings (if available), and also to learn where the settlements are located and how their names are declined.
According to Ihar Palynski, there are also ideas to describe their origin and add coordinates.
“Some sources of information exist, and we are organizing them. There may be inaccuracies—the original database is quite old—but we are catching and correcting errors and adding data sent to us (personally for now, but we will add the ability to do this via the website),” writes Ihar Palynski on his Facebook page.
A special domain, bielarus.live, was acquired for the online guide.
It is also noted that all information currently available in the online guide is based on Valentyna Lemtsyuhova's guide, as well as the grammatical database of the Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
