"If Trump unequivocally stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we, of course, will not go to America. We are negotiating with FIFA about holding our national team's matches in Mexico," said Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation.
According to the original schedule, the Iranian national team's group stage matches at the World Cup against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt are to be held in Los Angeles and Seattle.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. It was previously reported that Iran might withdraw its participation, in which case it would need to be replaced by another team, most likely from Asia.
The first intercontinental playoff matches will take place next week.
