Europeans must step up and defend their own interests, as the US, China and Russia are now "decidedly against" them, French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Friday.
"We should not underestimate that this is a unique moment when the President of the USA, the President of Russia, and the President of China are acting against Europeans. Therefore, this is the right time for us to wake up," Macron stated during a discussion with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, organized by the newspaper Kathimerini in Athens, Politico writes.
"We need to be a little more confident and propose our own agenda," he added.
The French president also stated that he expects tensions with the US to continue beyond Donald Trump's presidency.
"This is a historical trend. We can cooperate with the US on some issues, and it still makes sense due to shared values and historical ties, but I really believe that this US approach will persist," he noted.
He emphasized that the main difference between Trump's first and second terms is that many European countries considered the first term an exception that would end and not require fundamental changes.
"Now many colleagues see the situation more clearly because after so many years we say: okay, we need to react. We must act as Europeans, be more cohesive, defend our own interests. And for me, this is the right direction."
