Alena Tabolich Dies

The Belarusian linguist and translator from English, Candidate of Philological Sciences, passed away at the age of 87, Radio Racyja reports .

Alena Tabolich was born in the village of Horna, Zelva district, on April 15, 1940. She graduated from Zelva Secondary School No. 1, and later from the Minsk Institute of Foreign Languages. For some time, she worked as a school teacher.

In the 2000s, as part of a working group of seven linguists, she participated in the preparation of the "Strategy for the Development of the Belarusian Language in the 21st Century" for the Society of the Belarusian Language.

In 1989, she became one of the compilers of the "English-Belarusian-Russian Dictionary". In 1995 – "Pocket English-Belarusian-Russian Dictionary". She published translation books "Silver Rain" (1999) and "Hawthorn Lantern" (2006). The book "Silver Rain" included translations of poems by 29 American and English poets. The book "Hawthorn Lantern" included translations of poems by American and British poets into Belarusian. A separate section comprised Belarusian poems translated into English, by poets such as: Ryhor Baradulin, Danuta Bichel, Larysa Heniush, Mikhas Skobla, and Siarhei Paniznik.

In 2013, the translator became one of the compilers of the "English-Belarusian Dictionary" with 60,000 words (765 pages). In 2019, she translated Anatol Kleshchuk's photo album "Under the Sky of Belarus" into English.
