A Battle Over Brigitte Bardot's Inheritance Unfolds in France. The Man She Lived With for the Last 30 Years Is Left With Nothing

The dispute over French film star Brigitte Bardot's inheritance has escalated following the publication of a private letter, which indicates that the actress, several years before her death, effectively ended her relationship with her last partner, Bernard de Chiara, also known as Bernard d'Ormale, writes the BBC.

In the letter, dated November 2022, Bardot accused the man, with whom she had lived for over 30 years, of "patiently destroying her day by day." The actress wrote that she gave him everything, hoping to find a life companion who would reciprocate her love, share her joys and great sorrows, and appreciate the life she provided for him.

However, Bardot further confessed that she had reached the brink of despair and was in great need of support, tenderness, and the presence of a loved one, but her partner was incapable of providing it.

The letter's publication strengthened the position of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which advocates for animal welfare and is involved in the dispute over the actress's inheritance. De Chiara, in turn, accuses the foundation of being too hasty in managing Bardot's property, without considering the interests of her close friends and those in her circle.

A week ago, 85-year-old de Chiara left the La Madrague house on the Mediterranean coast, where he had lived with the actress since the early 1990s. According to journalistic reports, Bardot financially supported her partner for many years, which is why he now lacks even a bank account and a social security card.

He was particularly displeased by the foundation's decision to sell the actress's household items in September, primarily from her Paris apartment. At the auction, they fetched almost a million euros. These funds were divided between the foundation and Bardot's only son, Nicolas Charrier.

De Chiara stated that he was outraged that just a few months after the actress's death, her personal belongings began to be turned into souvenirs.

De Chiara himself was a businessman and had previously collaborated with the leader of the French far-right, Jean-Marie Le Pen. Friends of the couple said that their relationship was difficult, marked by frequent conflicts and periods of reconciliation. From the perspective of French law, they were not officially married, yet the man remained by the actress's side until her last days and cared for her during her illness.

After Brigitte Bardot's death in December 2025, her will was made public. The actress distributed her property between her own foundation and her son, Nicolas Charrier, who lives in Oslo. De Chiara was not mentioned in the will. Bardot also stipulated that the La Madrague villa be vacated within six months of her death.

Lawyers are now compiling a final inventory of the actress's property. Representatives of the foundation accused de Chiara of removing some items from La Madrague, including a Mini Moke car. The foundation's president, Max Guazzini, stated that he does not accuse the man of theft, but the disappearance of the car creates a problem.

According to foundation representatives, de Chiara has no legal rights to the inheritance, with the exception of a share in the Paris apartment, which is now being put up for sale. After being evicted from La Madrague, the man himself lives in an apartment rented from the municipality of Saint-Tropez.

Guazzini admitted that, from a human perspective, de Chiara's reluctance to leave the home where he lived with Bardot for several decades is understandable. However, according to him, the foundation is merely complying with the law and the actress's own wishes. He emphasized that the foundation is not responsible for Bardot not leaving her partner the right to continue living in La Madrague.

The maintenance of La Madrague and the actress's second residence, La Garrigue, requires significant expenses. Both buildings were in need of repair at the time of Bardot's death, and now also require round-the-clock security. Therefore, the foundation is looking for ways to make these properties a source of income.

Initially, the idea of creating a museum dedicated to the actress in La Madrague was considered, but it was abandoned due to difficulties with car access to the house. Instead, the foundation is considering the possibility of conducting tours, fashion shows, and film shoots.

After concluding her film career in 1973, Brigitte Bardot dedicated herself to animal protection. According to her foundation's information, approximately 13,000 animals are currently under its care.

Before meeting Bernard de Chiara, Bardot was married three times: to director Roger Vadim, actor Jacques Charrier, and industrial heir Gunter Sachs. French media also reported that Bardot and de Chiara held a marriage ceremony in Norway, but this marriage was never registered in France.
