Also for the first time in history, an indigenous woman has been elected governor, but in a different state.

In the gubernatorial elections in the American state of Georgia, Democratic Party representative Keisha Lance Bottoms won, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a state in US history, Bild reports.
The former mayor of Atlanta defeated Republican Rick Jackson — a billionaire who invested more than $200 million of his own funds into his election campaign. Jackson conceded defeat.
Bottoms' victory was also historic for Georgia: for the first time since 1998, Democrats won the governorship. During the campaign, the politician focused on economic issues and criticism of the Donald Trump administration. At the victory celebration, she promised to represent the interests of all residents of the state, regardless of their political views.
“It doesn’t matter who you voted for today — I will be governor for all of Georgia,” Bottoms stated.

Another historic victory took place in New Mexico, where Democratic Party representative Deb Haaland won the gubernatorial elections.
She will be the first indigenous woman in the US elected governor of a state.
Haaland belongs to the Laguna Pueblo people. In 2018, she became one of the first two indigenous women elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and later served as Secretary of the Interior in the Joe Biden administration.
