The authorities are preparing a change of borders between Gomel and Loev districts: the territories of Karpawski, Stradubski, and Kawpinski village councils, located beyond the Dnieper River, are planned to be transferred to the Gomel District. This became known from an announced public discussion, which will take place from November 6 to December 6, 2026, as reported by Flagshtok .
Local residents have been raising the issue of transferring the so-called trans-Dnieper zone of Loev region to the Gomel District for many years. The reason is that transport links between the villages on the other side of the Dnieper and the district center of Loev are very inconvenient.
One can get there either directly by ferry, or by making a detour by road. In the latter case, the route is almost 130 kilometers long and takes about two hours.
The operation of the 'Loev — Abakumy' ferry crossing depends on the weather, the water level in the Dnieper, and ice conditions. Navigation usually stops in late November or early December, when the river begins to freeze. The winter break lasts until spring — usually until the end of March or April.
In addition, the ferry sometimes does not operate due to low water levels or the need for technical maintenance. During such periods, residents of the trans-Dnieper zone have to make a long detour to get to Loev, for example, to a hospital or government agencies to resolve administrative issues.
For decades, two possible solutions to the problem were discussed: the transfer of these territories to the Gomel District or the construction of a bridge in the Loev area. However, until now, the issue remained unresolved.
Now it is planned to transfer a significant part of Loev region beyond the Dnieper to the Gomel District, effectively the entire territory of the 'Dnyaprouski-Sozhski' nature reserve. As a result, the territory of the Gomel District will almost reach the urban settlement of Loev.
The length of the state border of the Gomel District along the Sozh River will also increase. By the way, it is in this area that flights of Russian drones are regularly recorded.
