On Tuesday, November 6th the Presidential Elections take place in USA. The favorites in the race for the White House are the current President democrat Barack Obama and his rival form the Republican Party Mitt Romney. Will the US elections affect the relations with Belarus? Expert of Belarusian Analytical Center Dzmitry Kukhliej was asked to comment on this issue.
“Any changes in the Belarusian-American relations due to the Elections results are not likely to happen. The United States support a principal approach towards the Belarusian authority regardless of who the American President is,” he said.
Besides, according to him, “Belarus, to put it mildly, is not a top priority country for the US foreign politics.”
“The level of the economic relations between the countries is not high unlike the level of relation with the EU countries. That’s why there is no lobbying of Belarusian business interests and therefore there is no influence on the American politics towards Belarus,” noted Dzmitry Kukhliej.
“It should be reminded that the Belarusian-American relations freeze happened due to the initiative of the official Minsk back in 2008, when the Belarusian authority expelled the US Ambassador and then demanded to reduce the number of personnel of the Embassy.
“At the moment the diplomatic representative office of the US in Belarus is at the level of Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and the development of the Belarusian-American relations entirely depends on the Belarusian authority. Of course, the USA are interested in restoring the fully functional Embassy in Belarus, but they will not agree to soften its approach towards the official Minsk without changes in the internal politics of Belarus,” considers expert.
