Putin: Latest genetic studies indicate that Russians and Ukrainians are one people
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview with propagandist Pavel Zarubin, stated that he considers the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia to be a historical part of Russia, and Russians and Ukrainians to be "one people."

According to the Russian leader, talking about Ukraine's territorial losses is, allegedly, inappropriate.
"Firstly, my attitude to this is as follows: this is not their territory, this is historically Russian territory," Putin declared.
He claims that the inhabitants of these territories first voted for state independence, and then for reunification with the Russian Federation.
According to Putin, Russia is still ready to negotiate and find a way out of the difficult situation. He called Ukrainians a very close people to Russians.
"We are still ready to negotiate and find solutions to this difficult, complicated situation. In the sense that they (Ukrainians) are a very close people to us, you understand what there is to say. The latest genetic studies show that they are, in fact, one people."
Putin also announced that Russia has informed the United States of its readiness to resume negotiations in a trilateral format. According to him, their goal should be to achieve a lasting peace and guarantee Russia's security.
"We are ready to resume these contacts to achieve this goal," Putin said.
In general, as he claims:
"Kyiv itself chose to fight — 'please.' Russia offered Ukraine to help negotiate with Donbas, but Kyiv chose cannons."
Russia, he claims, "advocated a peaceful resolution to the conflict from the very beginning."
