Ophthalmologist explained what danger "floaters" in front of the eyes warn about
Belarusian ophthalmologist of the highest category, Vadim Murashka, told "Minskaya Prauda" in which cases "floaters," flashes, and rings in front of the eyes can indicate danger to vision and require an urgent visit to a specialist.

According to the doctor, "floaters," especially noticeable against a bright background, are often an age-related change associated with the destruction of the vitreous body of the eye. Its fibers can change structure, stick together, and form small opacities.
Usually, they pose no danger. If the number of such "floaters" does not change for years, there is no reason for an urgent visit to the doctor. However, due to fatigue, they can become more noticeable.
A different situation arises with sudden detachment of the vitreous body from the retina. In such a case, a person may unexpectedly notice a large opacity in the center of their field of vision. It does not necessarily have the shape of a regular Weiss ring: it can be C-shaped, linear, partial, or resemble a large ball.
At the same time, flashes, sparks, or lightning in front of the eyes often appear. Such phenomena can indicate retinal tension. Approximately 14% of cases of vitreous detachment result in a retinal tear. The risk of complications increases if vision simultaneously deteriorates or a hemorrhage occurs in the vitreous body.
The ophthalmologist named several alarming symptoms that require consulting a specialist within a day. These include a sudden and sharp increase in the number of "floaters," the appearance of large opacities resembling a ring, cloud, or curtain, frequent or constant flashes and lightning in front of the eyes.
Special attention should be paid to a shadow or curtain from the side, which seems to cover part of the field of vision, as well as a sudden deterioration of vision or distortion of the outlines of objects.
If flashes occur simultaneously in both eyes and are accompanied by dizziness, double vision, weakness, or speech impairment, the cause may not be in the eyes themselves, but in a neurological disorder. Such symptoms require immediate medical evaluation.
To detect possible retinal damage, an examination of the fundus with a dilated pupil is necessary. The doctor instills special drops, after which they examine the peripheral areas of the retina using special lenses. The procedure is painless.
According to Vadim Murashka, if a retinal tear is detected in time, it can often be treated with a laser, thus preventing retinal detachment.
