The 38-year-old man, who was wanted for resisting arrest and grievous bodily harm, simply stood among the figures of Mary and Joseph and decided not to move, writes Bild.
The mayor of Galatone, Flavio Filoni, noticed the unusual character in the Nativity scene. At first, he mistook the man for a new life-size figure and even photographed him.
"I was passing by the manger and noticed that next to Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and the shepherd, there was another shepherd who hadn't been there before," he recounted.
The situation became clear when the shepherd unexpectedly moved. According to Filoni, he asked if everything was alright, and the man replied that he wanted to spend the night right in the manger. After that, the mayor called the police.
A document check revealed that the man — a native of Ghana — had been wanted for several weeks after escaping from Bologna. As a result, the Ghanaian ended up in a prison in the city of Lecce. In Bologna, he was sentenced to nine months in prison.
