Hackers tried to defrost refrigerators with donor blood in France
Refrigeration equipment at three regional blood banks in France suffered a cyberattack on Sunday night into Monday, at the same time hackers attacked supermarkets from Sweden to Belgium, writes Reuters.
The attack occurred on the night of November 2nd — simultaneously with hacks of refrigeration equipment in supermarkets in several European countries.
According to the French Ministry of Health, some control and management systems for cold rooms at EFS blood service centers were affected.
EFS spokeswoman Charly Dubois explained that staff are present 24/7 at the centers, as blood may be needed at any moment. When the systems signaled problems, personnel transferred supplies to refrigerators that were not connected to the network.
By November 4th, the situation was brought under control. Remote access to the affected equipment was disabled. Specialists are investigating how the hack occurred, which devices it affected, and when they can be safely returned to service.
Around the same time, hackers interfered with the operation of refrigerators in stores in eight European countries. Due to temperature increases, retail chains had to discard a large quantity of products.
Who is behind these attacks is still being investigated.
