Four NASA experiment participants emerged from isolation after 378 days on "Mars"

Participants in a NASA experiment tested what it's like to live and work on Mars. Their isolation has now ended: scientists will study how they endured these 378 days, Reuters writes .

Four participants emerged from isolation on Saturday, October 31, at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. They entered the experimental habitat on October 19, 2025.

This was the second CHAPEA mission — a NASA project that helps study human health and performance in conditions similar to a long-duration expedition to Mars.

Mission medical officer Ellen Ellis joked upon emerging that they "lived in captivity by their own will."

Joining her in isolation were commander Ross Elder, scientist Matthew Montgomery, and flight engineer James Spicer.

Life with limited supplies and slow communication

The participants maintained their habitat in working order, grew plants, and performed tasks that simulated work on Mars. Resources were limited.

A separate part of the test was communication with NASA employees. Messages and responses were transmitted with delays to simulate the difficulties of communication between different planets.

“These delays require patience, careful planning and greater autonomy – qualities that will be essential for future astronauts traveling millions of miles from home,” said Vanessa Wyche, director of the Johnson Space Center, who met the crew upon their exit.

Now, the participants face two weeks of examinations and discussions of the results with NASA scientists. The agency wants to understand how people adapt to daily tasks and stresses in long-duration missions beyond Earth and what helps them maintain health, performance, and connections with others.

First the Moon, then Mars

The first CHAPEA experiment took place in 2023–2024. At that time, another group of four people also spent 378 days in isolation.

NASA, which is already exploring Mars with robots and orbiters, is considering sending humans there as early as the 2030s. Before that, the agency plans to return astronauts to the Moon — for the first time since 1972.

Ellis, after emerging, called on the US to maintain leadership in space. She mentioned the Trump administration's plans to create an academy for training space specialists and to build a lunar base.

Experimental mission commander Ross Elder acknowledged that a flight to Mars involves significant risks. However, in his opinion, thanks to research, ingenuity, endurance, and effort, the landing of humans on this planet is "not only achievable, but inevitable."
