Russian spy ship watching NATO exercises intercepted off the coast of Scotland
The Royal Navy of Great Britain intercepted the Russian reconnaissance vessel "Viktor Leonov", which was monitoring NATO military exercises, off the coast of Scotland. This was reported by The Telegraph.

The British Royal Navy stated on November 2 that its Merlin helicopters tracked a Russian "Vishnya" class vessel, which was located near the Outer Hebrides from September 29 to October 8. For this operation, the helicopters were redeployed from Culdrose base in Cornwall to Glasgow-Prestwick Airport.
The vessel was monitoring NATO warships during the Strike Warrior exercises, which involved 2,000 servicemen from six alliance countries.
Commander James Hall of the Culdrose Naval Air Station stated that the operation demonstrated the readiness and capability of British forces to provide round-the-clock security for the country. According to him, Merlin helicopter units can respond quickly to threats.
Earlier this year, Merlin helicopters were equipped with the latest sonar buoys. The modernization, costing 40 million pounds sterling, or almost 48 million euros, is expected to improve the capabilities of tracking Russian submarines.
As The Telegraph notes, in the first seven months of 2026, Russian activity in and around British waters increased by 25% compared to the same period in 2025.
Britain had previously reported monitoring a Russian reconnaissance vessel off the coast of Scotland, which was likely collecting data on underwater infrastructure.
In addition, in September, NATO allies detected Russian submarines in Arctic waters near the Svalbard archipelago. They were conducting exercises using secret weapons designed to disable important underwater cables.
In May, Germany deployed a reconnaissance vessel, equipped with modern electronic intelligence technology, to the Baltic Sea due to the presence of Russian vessels there.
