Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) has detained ten people in the city of Atyrau, in the west of the country, who are suspected of creating an extremist group and preparing a coup d'état. The agency announced this in a press release.

According to the KNB, the members of the association planned to violently change the constitutional order in the western region of the country. The arrests took place on October 30, coordinated with the prosecutor's office within the framework of a pre-trial investigation.
The suspects are accused of creating and leading an extremist group, participating in its activities, promoting terrorism, and inciting religious hatred.

During searches at the residences of the detainees, KNB officers reportedly seized firearms, drugs, religious paraphernalia, and literature. In addition, the agency reported the shutdown of three underground training centers for children and teenagers.

According to information from the Kazakh KNB, some of the detainees had previously been convicted of terrorist and other criminal offenses. Other details are not disclosed "in the interests of the investigation."
In 2025, KNB officers in Kazakhstan detained five foreign nationals who, it was alleged, planned a terrorist attack in Almaty. In September and October of the same year, eight citizens of Kazakhstan were detained as part of criminal cases on suspicion of promoting terrorism.
