Bananas, nuts, and flights.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MNS) of Belarus published an unexpected list of where people might encounter radiation — background radiation constantly surrounds us.
Bananas. They contain potassium, a small part of which is the radioactive isotope potassium-40. For a clear comparison of small doses, the humorous concept of "banana equivalent" is used, writes the MNS.
Brazil nuts. In addition to potassium, they accumulate radium from the soil. The MNS states that the radiation dose in them is a thousand times higher than in other nuts.
Cigarette smoke. Tobacco contains polonium-210 and lead-210. They get onto plants from soil, air, and fertilizers, and during smoking — into the lungs.
Granite and New York's Grand Central Station. The MNS cites the station as an example of a building where granite creates an elevated background radiation level. This rock can contain uranium, thorium, and potassium.
High-altitude cities. The higher a person is, the thinner the layer of atmosphere protecting them from cosmic radiation. For example, in Denver, the dose of cosmic radiation is approximately twice as high as at sea level.
Airplane flights. At high altitudes, the impact of cosmic radiation is stronger. The MNS compared a flight from London to New York to one fluorography examination.
