France admits failures in its response to violence. Now deploying troops and preparing for new protests
French authorities are preparing a large-scale operation for new protests on October 24: they will involve military personnel and police reinforcements, and also review tactics. The government admitted that during the unrest last weekend, there were failures in the work of special services and the deployment of police forces.

“The deployment of forces next Saturday will be massive,” said French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on October 20, Reuters reports.
According to him, the primary task is to restore order after the looting and arson that engulfed Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities on October 17.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez explained in parliament how the army plans to be used.
Military personnel will be given part of the permanent security tasks to free up police officers and gendarmes to maintain order during protests.
Authorities are also preparing reinforcements from special police and gendarmerie units. Among the means that may be deployed are armored vehicles, helicopters, and water cannons.
In addition, Nuñez allowed the prohibition of individual demonstrations, including registered ones, if authorities deem that they could get out of control, BFMTV reports.
Changes are being prepared after criticism that city centers remained insufficiently protected during the previous wave of unrest. Lecornu acknowledged the problems: failures of special services, too static deployment of police units, and the decision not to cancel pre-planned police vacations.
Nuñez apologized for the mistakes made.
“I deeply regret what happened. I accept my share of responsibility,” the minister said.
A curfew has already been introduced in some areas affected by the unrest. In some places, it applies only to minors. According to the government, these restrictions helped calm the situation. They were extended for the night of October 20-21.
In parallel, 200 investigators have been involved in searching for participants in the street violence. Parliament is creating a commission that should clarify the causes of the unrest and the circumstances of the authorities' response.
New protests for Saturday were announced by the National Union of Students of France. The organization demands changes in the education system, which it considers underfunded and of insufficient quality.
Separately, groups calling themselves "yellow vests" called for actions against rising fuel prices. This movement emerged in 2018 due to plans to increase fuel taxes and then blocked roads for months until the government made concessions.
