Explosives for Russian Sabotage in Europe Were Transported by Belarusian Agents — WSJ Citing Intelligence Sources

Vladimir Putin personally ordered intensified sabotage against NATO countries, writes The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. intelligence data. After an attack on the airport Leipzig/Halle, a Kremlin representative warned Berlin that this was not the last target. In the preparation of the Leipzig attack, according to the publication, Belarusians played a significant role.

Three European officials, familiar with U.S. intelligence conclusions, informed The Wall Street Journal about Putin's personal order.

According to the newspaper's sources, the Russians intensified sabotage activities amid the lack of significant success of the Russian army in Ukraine and increasingly intense Ukrainian strikes on targets deep within Russia. Moscow was also dissatisfied that negotiations with Washington did not compel Kyiv to make concessions.

One of the first attacks within the intensified campaign was an attempted sabotage at Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4. According to WSJ, one drone with explosives crashed into an "Antonov" cargo plane, used for transporting military aid to Ukraine, but did not explode. A second collided with another plane, and a third exploded near the airport fence.

In the preparation of the Leipzig attack, according to the publication, Belarusians played a significant role. German investigators believe their actions were coordinated by Oleg Lyovushkin — a former Russian serviceman recruited by Russian military intelligence, known as the GRU.

"Lyovushkin directed several Belarusian agents who transported explosives across borders, assembled drones, and positioned them for the attack," writes WSJ, citing investigators and intelligence officers.

Serbia served as a transit point for this network: modified drones and explosive devices were transported from there to Germany.

Later, Serbian authorities arrested seven suspects, including a person with Russian and Serbian citizenship. According to the Serbian prosecutor's office, the group purchased and stored explosives and drones before sending them to EU countries.

Lyovushkin himself and at least one of his alleged accomplices from Belarus left Germany two days before the attack. As WSJ writes, they flew to Serbia, and from there to Russia.

Western officials claim that the GRU's special operations unit, led by Colonel-General Andrey Averyanov, is responsible for the Russian sabotage campaign.

Three European officials, familiar with U.S. intelligence conclusions, told WSJ that Vladimir Putin personally ordered the intensification of sabotage against NATO countries.

After the failed attack on the airport, a Kremlin representative, who maintained an unofficial communication channel with the German government, contacted a representative in Berlin. According to officials familiar with the conversation, he warned: Leipzig would not be the last target.

Russia denies involvement in sabotage in Europe.
