Another Russian region cut payments to families of those killed in the war against Ukraine
Wounded soldiers will also receive less money, The Insider reports .

In the Smolensk region, the regional payment to the family of someone killed in the war against Ukraine was reduced from one million Russian rubles (about 12 thousand dollars) to 700 thousand (about 8.5 thousand dollars). The corresponding decree was signed by Governor Vasily Anokhin on October 16.
For a light injury, 300 thousand Russian rubles (about 3.7 thousand dollars) are now provided instead of 500 thousand (about 6 thousand dollars). For a severe injury — 500 thousand instead of 700 thousand (about 8.5 thousand dollars).
For injuries not included in the state-approved list, the payment was reduced threefold: from 300 thousand Russian rubles (about 3.7 thousand dollars) to 100 thousand (about 1.2 thousand dollars).
Changes in payments from the regional budget affected military personnel, Rosgvardiya employees, volunteers, and their families.
According to The Insider, the Smolensk region became at least the eighth region in Russia where payments to families of those killed in the war were cut or abolished in 2026. Earlier, such decisions were made in the Ulyanovsk, Kemerovo, Omsk, Saratov, Orenburg, and Samara regions, as well as in Bashkortostan.
