Thailand wants to collect money for the right to leave the country
Thailand is discussing the possibility of introducing a new fee for passengers leaving the country by plane. It is proposed to charge 1000 baht (about 30 dollars) from each air passenger, regardless of nationality. If the initiative is supported, it will also affect Belarusian tourists.

Public discussion of the proposal began on September 30 and will continue until October 29, 2026. The project was prepared by Thailand's Revenue Department.
In the first stage, it is proposed to set the fee at 1000 baht, which according to the current exchange rate is about 30 dollars, for each departure from Thailand by plane. All passengers who are not on the list of exceptions will have to pay it.
However, legislation will allow setting the fee up to 5000 baht, or approximately 149 dollars, for one departure in the future, but for now, it's only about the initial rate of 1000 baht.
For those leaving Thailand by land or sea transport, the new fee is not planned to be introduced in the first stage.
There will also be no need to pay separately at the airport. According to the project, the fee will be included directly in the air ticket price. Airlines or ticket vendors will be required to collect it simultaneously with the flight payment. Thus, for most tourists, it will appear as another component of the return ticket price.
Exceptions are also provided. It is proposed to exempt children under two years old, some transit passengers who do not leave the special transit zone of the airport, aircraft crews, and some other categories from the fee.
Thailand remains a popular winter holiday destination for Belarusians, who go there for the warm sea, beaches, and the opportunity to spend winter in an Asian climate. If the new fee is introduced, it will be a noticeable additional expense for family travels.
For example, a family of two adults and two children older than two years will pay an additional 4000 baht, or about 119 dollars, for one departure from Thailand. If two adults and a child under two years old, who is exempt from the fee, are traveling, the additional payment will be 2000 baht, or about 60 dollars.
For now, tourists do not need to pay anything extra, as the project is only in the public discussion stage and may still change. If the law is passed, it should come into force 180 days after official publication. Moreover, it is proposed to exempt passengers who purchased air tickets before the new rules came into force, even if the departure itself occurs later.
