Minsker woman named her son an unusual name. Her Dobr is the only one in Belarus
The mother says that only adults react strangely to Dobr — children usually have no questions.
In 2022, Tatsiana Yurkevich gave birth to a boy. They decided to give him an unusual name — Dobr. The woman insists: it's not an abbreviation of Dabrynia, but an independent, full-fledged name.
To register a child with such a name, the parents had to write an application to the registry office asking for permission to name their son exactly that — because, naturally, there is no Dobr in dictionaries.
Tatsiana is completely satisfied with her decision.
«I love how it sounds. This combination of consonants gives the name a certain strictness and seriousness. And in combination with the patronymic — Dobr Mikitich — it's simply a joy to my heart,» the woman says in her TikTok blog.
Tatsiana is not upset by the fact that in the future her grandchildren will have the patronymics Dabrovich or Dabrouna.
Problems due to the child's original name only arise with adults. Tatsiana complains that almost everyone feels obliged to evaluate the name. Some remark "cool name," "interestingly named." Others say, "What were the parents thinking?"
Sometimes it reaches absurdity — the mother admits that she has been repeatedly tried to be convinced that the boy should really be called Dabrynia, and that the people who allowed Dobr to be entered into the documents were crazy.
Grandparents were also a little surprised. They wondered how other children would call their grandson. After all, most Belarusians are used to more standard names.
Children, according to the mother, are usually not surprised when they hear the name of a new friend.
«There are children who say, ‘well, he said it, let's play.’ There are children who ask again. And then I step in and say that his name is Dobr. Because such a combination of consonants is difficult for a child to pronounce.»
The little ones don't laugh or roll their eyes. For them, it's a completely normal name.
Tatsiana says that her Dobr is the only one in Belarus. That's why she was even a little upset when she looked at the traditional compilation of unusual names for newborns in 2022 and didn't see her son's name there.
