Minsk Gambling Addict Broke into His Sister's Safe with a Can Opener to Pay Off Debts
The court sent the man to a high-security penal colony.

A 35-year-old Minsk resident, suffering from ludomania (gambling addiction), stole a safe containing money and jewelry worth more than 40 thousand rubles from his own sister. He needed the money to pay off debts, Minsk-news writes.
The man had financial difficulties: for some time he was unemployed, borrowed money from acquaintances, and took out loans. Over time, creditors began insistently demanding the return of their money. Therefore, the man asked his sister to lend him a certain sum, but she refused, as her brother was prone to gambling.
Then the man decided to steal the safe from his sister's room. Opening it was not difficult — with the help of a can opener. Inside were money and jewelry totaling 40,257 rubles.
After the theft, the culprit went to a bank and exchanged part of the stolen savings — 3,300 euros and 3,450 dollars — for Belarusian rubles, to pay off his debts.
Upon returning home, the woman immediately noticed the disappearance of the safe and called her brother. Initially, he denied his involvement in the crime, but later confessed. The Minsk resident contacted the police.
A forensic psychiatric examination confirmed that the man suffers from a disorder in the form of pathological gambling addiction (ludomania). At the court hearing, the accused fully admitted his guilt and repented.
The court sentenced him to two and a half years of imprisonment. He will serve his sentence in a correctional colony under high-security conditions. He was also fined 50 base units (2,250 rubles).
Additionally, the man must compensate the victim for the incurred property damage.
