Following a record surge in contraband balloons from Belarus, Deputy Interior Minister Vaidas Jakštas says that the government is not yet considering closing the border as a response measure, but does not rule out that such a decision could be made in the future, reports alfa.lt.

"The idea (to close the border) is always there. We are not currently planning to close the border, because, apparently, it would be more of a diplomatic measure that does not solve the problem in essence," he told reporters on Monday.
According to the Deputy Minister, 57 cases of contraband balloons were recorded in just one night on Monday.
"We need to look for other measures that would help achieve the result, but we never rule out all possibilities," he assured. On Monday, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (EIM) also reported that three consortia had presented the best technological solutions to combat contraband balloons - they are represented by the companies "IT Logika", "Teltonika" and "Dangaus šviesos", the companies will receive funding in the amount of 1 million euros.
According to Jakstas, this measure will help solve the challenges of contraband balloons in the long term.
