Rivers and birds, or Callas, Beethoven, and da Vinci. Euro banknote design to change for the first time in a quarter-century

The European Central Bank has officially begun the process of updating the design of euro banknotes.

Their appearance has not been changed since the currency was introduced into circulation on January 1, 2002. Today's euro banknotes feature examples of European architecture from various styles and periods of history.

The regulator has proposed two concepts for the updated banknotes.

The first is "Rivers and Birds." According to the concept, each banknote will feature its own landscape and a representative of fauna, while the reverse side will depict European governance institutions. For example, the 10 euro banknote might feature a waterfall, a kingfisher by a waterfall or on a calm stretch of a river, and on the reverse side, the European Commission. The 50 euro banknote might show a winding river, a white stork over a valley, and on the reverse side, the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The second concept is dedicated to European culture, specifically prominent figures who changed science, art, and history. For example, the 5 euro banknote could feature the singer Maria Callas, the 10 euro banknote the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and the 100 euro banknote Leonardo da Vinci.

In March, designers are expected to submit their final sketches, and by the end of the year, the ECB will announce the winners.

New banknotes will only appear several years after the final decision, as the production of high-tech banknotes requires extensive preparation.

Meanwhile, the old banknotes will remain valid. The European Central Bank believes they will gradually and naturally exit circulation.
