Protests in the Albanian capital escalated into riots. Arson and clashes with police are taking place
The Albanian capital, Tirana, has once again become an arena for serious unrest. On October 14, protesters set fire to the Ministry of Education building. Rioters broke windows, committed arson, and clashed with police. Police used water cannons and tear gas.

Demonstrators are protesting against poor learning conditions and high tuition fees. Additionally, they demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. On October 14, protesters erected barricades with metal fences, threw stones and Molotov cocktails, writes BILD.
Even the day before, violence reached significant proportions. Demonstrators broke into the Tirana City Hall building, committed arson, and damaged other buildings. Police stated that 16 people were arrested.
The Ministry of Health reported numerous casualties: medical assistance was required by six police officers, eight demonstrators, three journalists, and two passers-by.
"Flamingo Protests" and Student Protests
Protests against the government have been regularly taking place in Albania since late May, when plans to build a luxury hotel in a coastal protected area became known. Due to the birds living there, the demonstrations became known as the "flamingo protests."
The project for this complex is linked to Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner. It sparked a discussion about alleged corruption and insufficient transparency in the activities of the Albanian state.
In addition to this, discontent is growing among students: they complain about high tuition fees and poor conditions at universities.
