Kaja Kallas: American negotiators have been trying to persuade Ukraine to surrender for almost two years

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas accused the US of pressuring Ukraine to surrender on terms favorable to Russian President Vladimir Putin. She made this statement on Tuesday, October 20, at a meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, amidst another round of peace talks in the Norwegian capital Oslo, writes Euronews.

"American negotiators have been trying to persuade Ukraine to surrender for almost two years, more than a year," Kallas said. According to her, Ukraine has not yet surrendered on Putin's terms only thanks to Europe's support.

Kallas also stressed that European countries should participate in the negotiations to counterbalance the White House's position, which, in her opinion, is increasingly leaning towards Moscow's interests.

Relations between the US and Europe worsened after US President Donald Trump concluded a diesel fuel supply agreement with Putin and eased sanctions until April 2027, without receiving any concessions from Russia in return.

Trump also called for new elections in Ukraine, even though holding them during wartime is prohibited, and complained that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is harder to deal with than Putin. Zelenskyy himself stated that he feels betrayed by Trump. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, he also said that he sees attempts to persuade Ukraine to surrender.

Speaking in Strasbourg, Kallas responded to criticism from some MEPs who claimed that Europe lacks a strategy for achieving peace. She stated that this is not the case and recalled a document she had submitted to the EU capitals. It lists demands to Moscow, which Europe will seek to fulfill within the framework of a future settlement.

According to Kallas, if Russia presents maximalist demands, then Europe must also put forward its conditions to balance the negotiations and make Moscow understand that European states must participate in decision-making, including regarding the possible lifting of sanctions.

"We are not going to give all this away for free, because it's not just about peace, but about lasting and just peace," she emphasized.

Kallas accused Russia of undermining Black Sea security through an armed blockade, using food as a weapon, and attempting to provoke global hunger. In recent weeks, Romania and Bulgaria reported Russian drone strikes near their territorial waters.

She also criticized Moscow for rejecting an energy truce and intensifying bombing raids on Ukraine ahead of winter.

"Ukraine wants peace more than anyone, as it has been living under bombardment for four years, and the fifth year is beginning," Kallas stated.

She added that Europe is also interested in peace, and claims to the contrary are false. According to her, the only side that does not want peace is Russia.

Kallas remains one of the most outspoken European critics of Trump's rapprochement with Moscow. Last week, in an interview with Euronews, she called the diesel fuel supply agreement a gift to Putin.

Brussels emphasizes that, despite growing disagreements, cooperation with the United States must continue to influence the peace process and protect Ukraine's interests.

On Tuesday, high-ranking representatives from the European Commission, NATO, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland flew to Oslo to participate in another round of negotiations.
