Latvia introduced laboratory checks for all Belarusian grain shipments
Since September, the State Revenue Service of Latvia has been checking all grain shipments arriving from Russia and Belarus. The purpose of the checks is to determine whether grain from Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia is being exported through Latvian territory.

This was announced by Baiba Šmite-Roķe, the Director-General of the service, on TV3. According to her, employees check the documents accompanying each shipment. Simultaneously, the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service takes grain samples from transit batches and sends them for laboratory analysis to France and the United Kingdom.
The examinations are intended to help determine the origin of the grain and ascertain whether it was grown in occupied Ukrainian territories.
If the analyses confirm the Ukrainian origin of grain from occupied territories, the information will be forwarded to the recipients of the shipment. Furthermore, the results of the checks could serve as grounds for restricting the activities of the respective carrier in Latvia. A ban on further grain transit through the country is also not ruled out.
However, Baiba Šmite-Roķe did not specify whether any grain shipments originating from the occupied territories of Ukraine have already been detected.
Despite the intensified checks, the transit of grain from Russia and Belarus through Latvia has significantly increased. In the first nine months of 2026, its volume was 2.7 times greater than in the corresponding period of 2025. The absolute volumes of transported grain were not reported.
