Minsk Hosts First-Ever Operation to Replace Two Hip Joints Simultaneously
At the 11th Clinical Hospital in Minsk, a unique operation was performed for the first time, during which a patient had both hip joints replaced simultaneously. Notably, the surgical intervention was carried out without cutting muscles. The operation was successful.

As reported by the Health Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee, the woman was admitted to the hospital with a severe diagnosis — bilateral aseptic necrosis of the femoral heads with collapse. The disease was accompanied by severe pain and significant gait disturbances. After a careful assessment of possible risks, doctors decided to operate on both joints simultaneously.
The operation was performed by a team of three doctors — traumatologists-orthopedists. They used a direct anterior approach — a minimally invasive technique that reduces blood loss, lowers postoperative pain, and minimizes the risk of endoprosthesis dislocation.

Another advantage of this method is faster recovery. The patient can stand up on the day of the operation. According to the woman, on the fifth day after the intervention, she no longer felt pain and could walk around the ward even without crutches.
However, simultaneous replacement of both hip joints has its peculiarities and requires strict patient selection. The final decision on the possibility of such an operation is made by doctors, taking into account cardiological risks.
