Spain and Italy reinstate full Schengen between themselves

Spain and Italy have agreed to abolish mutual border checks in airports and seaports. They were introduced in August by decision of the Italian government following the migration crisis in Ceuta.

As reported by Spanish broadcaster RTVE, the decision to stop checks was made after a phone call between the interior ministers of the two countries — Fernando Grande-Marlaska and Matteo Piantedosi. The ministers' talks were preceded by a meeting between Spanish and Italian Prime Ministers Pedro Sánchez and Giorgia Meloni, which took place during a European Council session.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior stated that the decision not to continue border checks was made after a careful analysis of the situation. At the same time, the countries will strengthen information exchange to ensure the security of the common Schengen area.

Since August 1, selective checks were carried out on passengers arriving from Spain at Italian airports and seaports. Giorgia Meloni's government temporarily suspended the Schengen Agreement following the migration crisis in Ceuta.

Last week, it was reported that Rome and Madrid had agreed to jointly lift the control measures in airports and seaports, introduced after these events. There is no land border between the countries.
