Mother abandoned three children in checkered bags in different places. They found each other decades later

The children were left on opposite sides of the Irish border. One in an unlocked car, the other in a phone booth.

An Irish mother abandoned her three children in bags in different locations. They only learned about each other many years later, BBC reports.

David McBride grew up in Belfast in a loving adoptive family and always knew he was adopted. At 15, he received his birth certificate and saw that it was almost blank: parents unknown, even the place and date of birth were not indicated. He was found as a baby on the front seat of an unlocked car, in a checkered bag and in blue clothes.

Such an event was so rare in Northern Ireland at the time that the story made headlines. Decades of searching yielded almost nothing. Finally, on his sister's advice, he took a DNA test and found his biological sister.

Helen Ward was seven years younger. She was found in 1969 on the other side of the Irish border: in a green checkered bag in a phone booth, with a warm bottle and spare clothes. A truck driver found her. She also grew up in an adoptive family and began searching for her mother when she had children herself. She found her brother when a friend gave her a home DNA test kit.

Helen and David

Their biological mother died at the age of 90 shortly before the brother and sister found each other. Their father had died even earlier. It turned out that the mother was a village girl from the west coast of Ireland and moved to Dublin. There she met the father, a bandleader. Their romance lasted about 40 years, but they broke too many taboos of conservative Ireland at the time: he was married, a Protestant, and she was a Catholic, and the children were born out of wedlock.

But that's not the whole story. When a young woman from Australia saw a TV program about David and Helen, she thought about her Irish father, John. It turned out that John Dowling was indeed their brother — the third, middle-aged child.

David, Helen, and John

David and Helen have many questions about their mother's actions, but they cannot condemn her. Helen says that abandoning three infants immediately after birth must have been terrible for her. David saw a video of his elderly mother holding a doll and not wanting to let it go. He thinks that's how she grieved the loss of her three children at the end of her life.
