A Dutch zoo employee has died after a leopard attack, confirmed the management of Beekse Bergen safari park. The woman had worked at the park for 40 years, writes the BBC.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the park employee was caring for two Persian leopards in their enclosure.

She sustained severe head and neck injuries and underwent emergency surgery, but the park announced her death on Tuesday.

The administration stated that an independent commission would investigate the circumstances of the incident.

According to a statement from Beekse Bergen park, located in the south of the Netherlands, the woman began working there at 17 years old and, with interruptions, dedicated four decades to the facility.

“Her death has deeply shaken all of us. We extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones. Our priority now is to support the family and colleagues,” the statement read.

The two leopards are usually kept separate from staff, but due to the weather, they were moved to a different enclosure.

What exactly happened there is not yet known, as there are no surveillance cameras inside.

According to the local publication NL Times, despite her severe injuries, the woman managed to call colleagues via radio. She was later airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

A park spokesperson told local TV channel Omroep Brabant that the leopards behaved according to their nature, so they will not be euthanized.

“They are predators and they remain so,” he noted.

Beekse Bergen also announced that they would create a memorial site where visitors and employees can leave messages of condolence.
