Election observers and campaign aides of opposition candidates are facing strong pressure from authorities ahead of the September 18-23 elections for the House of Representatives, Siarhiej Kaliakin, a coordinator of the Campaign for Fair Elections, told reporters in Minsk on Monday.
“We have received reports of multiple instances of police arresting campaign aides of parliamentary candidates, seizing electioneering material from them,” Mr. Kaliakin said.
He also referred to the arrest of parliamentary candidate Aliaksiej Haurucikau on August 30, who was detained for more than three hours in breach of regulations and had his car searched by police.
Authorities have interfered with opposition candidates' meetings with voters and election observers' preparations for monitoring the vote, Mr. Kaliakin said.
Election observers had tutorials and other printed material seized by police in Mahiliou, Hrodna and Minsk, according to the activist.
