Trump's Envoys Told Kyiv They are Trying to Bring Putin Back to the Negotiating Table with a Diesel Deal

U.S. President's special envoy Stephen Whitcoff and American leader's son-in-law Jared Kushner stated during negotiations with Ukrainian representatives that a diesel deal with Russia is intended to bring Vladimir Putin back to the negotiating table, informed sources told Reuters.
According to them, American negotiators noted that Putin had not yet been ready to negotiate an end to the war, but an agreement on supplying 2.25 million barrels of Russian diesel fuel to the U.S. market should "soften" his position and signal Trump's openness to cooperation with Russia.
Also, during the talks, representatives of the American president once again called on Ukraine to stop striking Russian oil refineries (NPR).
"The idea was that the U.S. could go back to Russia and say: 'Look, the Ukrainians have stopped striking, and we've made this deal with you. Now it's your turn to do something,' explained one of Reuters' sources."
At the same time, the Ukrainian delegation prematurely interrupted negotiations with representatives of the U.S. President. According to sources of the Financial Times, the reason was the diesel deal, which "caught Ukrainian negotiators by surprise," writes Moscow Times.
Kyiv representatives present at the meeting told Reuters that they were skeptical of the U.S. approach of trying to appease Russia through economic deals. None of such attempts had led to a ceasefire before.
An agency source close to the Kremlin stated that Putin would return to the negotiating table only when he "gets the remaining 11% of Donbas, which he can present internally as a victory."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously rejected the possibility of ceding territories to Russia but allowed for a freezing of the conflict along the existing front line.
Meanwhile, Trump himself believes that Putin shows greater interest in ending the war than the Ukrainian leader.
"We must make Zelenskyy want to conclude an agreement," stated the head of the White House.
At the same time, he admitted that Moscow and Kyiv "don't know" how to end the conflict, and there is "very strong mutual animosity" between Putin and Zelenskyy.
Despite this, Trump promised to ensure that the parties conclude a peace agreement.
