Tapuzidis Becomes Honorary Consul of Another Country. It's His Third One
Belarusian prominent businessman Pavel Tapuzidis has become the Honorary Consul of Kyrgyzstan in Belarus. This is evidenced by current data from the diplomatic directory of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, noted the publication Office Life.
Pavel Tapuzidis, whose main assets include a capital tobacco factory and the "Korona" retail chain, already has considerable diplomatic experience of this kind. He previously obtained the status of honorary consul for Greece and Romania.
The office of the Honorary Consul of Kyrgyzstan is located in the "Zamok" shopping center, which belongs to the businessman. Currently, the state flags of three countries whose interests he represents in Belarus are displayed on the building: Greece, Romania, and Kyrgyzstan.
The appointment of entrepreneurs as honorary consuls is a widespread international practice. Unlike career diplomats, honorary consuls do not receive a salary for this work and are not civil servants. At the same time, they can continue to run their own businesses.
For foreign states, this format allows them to have an influential representative in another country without significant state budget expenditures. Honorary consuls help develop trade, economic, and humanitarian ties.
The motives of entrepreneurs who hold such positions can vary. Diplomatic status can enhance business reputation, facilitate contacts with foreign officials, help enter new markets, and strengthen the trust of foreign banks.
Furthermore, honorary consuls can enjoy certain privileges provided by international agreements, including the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. However, consular immunity is limited in nature and applies to actions performed in the exercise of consular functions. Honorary consuls can also be entitled to use special license plates.
