A bunch of keys in Brest helped track down an assailant after nine years

The results of genetic expertise helped identify a person involved in a robbery in 2017, reports the State Forensic Examination Committee

A woman reported to the police. She recounted that while in an elevator, an unknown person openly attempted to steal her property: a bag, a wallet with money, a mobile phone, as well as documents, including her pension certificate and disability certificate.

However, he failed to complete the act: the woman resisted, and the assailant fled the crime scene.

In 2017, a bunch of keys belonging to the woman was submitted for examination to genetic experts of the State Forensic Examination Committee Directorate for Brest region.

During the examination, specialists discovered biological material (cells) from an unknown man on the object. However, at that time, it was not possible to match the obtained data with a specific individual.

Nine years later, thanks in part to the replenishment of the State Forensic Examination Committee's genotypic database with new data, experts discovered a DNA match, found on the keys in 2017, with the biological material of a Brest resident born in 1999.

The man has now been recognized as a suspect in the criminal case.
