Fatima Báñez, former Minister of Labour and Social Security of Spain, died in the train crash that occurred on October 28 in the province of Toledo. This was reported on October 29 by the Spanish employers' association CEOE, which she headed, writes "European Pravda".
It became known the day before that Báñez was traveling on one of the trains involved in the accident. On Wednesday morning, CEOE reported her disappearance. The former minister was not among the hospitalized passengers, which intensified the concern of her loved ones, colleagues from the centre-right Popular Party, and representatives of business circles from her hometown of Huelva. Some of them expressed condolences even before the official confirmation of her death.
Fatima Báñez was a Member of Parliament for the Popular Party since 2000. In 2011, she headed the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in the government of Mariano Rajoy, who came to power after the 2008 financial crisis. During that period, Spain pursued a policy of fiscal austerity under the close scrutiny of European institutions.
After the resignation of the Rajoy government in 2018 due to a vote of no confidence, Báñez moved to the private sector. Initially, she worked as an advisor to an employers' association, and in July 2020, she became the chair of the CEOE Foundation.
The train crash occurred on Wednesday morning, October 28, near the town of Urda in the province of Toledo. Two trains — Iryo and AVE — carrying more than 540 people collided. According to the latest data, 69 people died.
