120 years ago, the first issue of the first legal Belarusian newspaper was published

"Nasha Dola" became the prototype of "Nasha Niva".

On September 14, 1906, according to the new style, the first issue of the newspaper "Nasha Dola" was published in Vilna. It was the first newspaper in the Belarusian language that was published legally.

Its full name was: "Nasha Dola The first Belarusian newspaper for the rural and urban working people. Published once a week in Russian and Polish letters."

The single print run of the first issue was 10 thousand copies.

Building at Vilenskaya, 21 (after World War II, the numbering of houses on Vilenskaya (Vilniaus gatvė) changed). Now it's the "Pinavia" cafe. Wikimedia Commons

The initial editorial board of this newspaper was small: brothers Ivan and Anton Lutskievich, Feliks Umastouski, Alaiza Pashkevich (Tsotka). I. Tukerkes and A. Hiedvila were listed as editors.

In the programmatic article "To Readers", the newspaper advocated participation in the revolutionary movement, social and national freedom, the development of class self-awareness among workers and peasants, and education in the native language.

Six issues were published. The newspaper was repeatedly arrested, and the editor was brought to criminal responsibility. A total of four issues were confiscated.

As a result, the sixth issue was the last. And on November 23 (November 10 according to the old style), 1906, the first issue of "Nasha Niva" was published.
